This year, while the majority of your local brick-and-mortar stops will have their "Closed" signs up, a lot of big-name retailers are going to great lengths to start Black Friday sales early -- opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day.

It's no surprise that retail giants such as Walmart and Target plan to be open on the food-filled holiday. In fact, Walmart, Target, Kohl's, Sears, Dick's Sporting Goods and Michael's will all open their doors to holiday shoppers at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Other retailers such as Best Buy, Macy's and Toys "R" Us will open an hour earlier, at 5 p.m. JCPenney, Old Navy and Belk will open even earlier: between 3 and 4 p.m.

But if you insist on shopping before your Thanksgiving feast, Big Lots is set to open at 7 a.m. and Bass Pro Shops at 8 a.m.

Although many stores are making it a point to be open, many customers won't show up on Thanksgiving. A recent survey of 2,000 consumers conducted by Morning Consult found that 59 percent of respondents said they do not support stores being open on Thanksgiving Day.

Retailers such as Gamestop, Home Depot, T.J. Maxx, HHGregg, Office Depot and Marshalls will be closed -- giving their employees time to spend with friends and family. It's the same for luxury department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, which plan to open 8 a.m. on Black Friday. In addition, all of Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. will be closed in honor of the holiday.

To the contrary, outdoor retail chain REI will be closed on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, encouraging employees and customers to enjoy the outdoors instead of shop through its #OptOutside campaign.

But for many people, shopping online will be their top choice. A recent study by Deloitte revealed that half of consumers plan to shop for gifts online this year.

Looks like stores better start gearing up for a crazy Cyber Monday.
