Mike Rowe: Freelancing Embodies the Entrepreneurial Spirit Just because you don't have aspirations to grow a company with massive scale doesn't mean you aren't an entrepreneur, the TV personality says.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

"Being an entrepreneur means looking in the mirror and having no one else to blame or congratulate but yourself," says Mike Rowe, who is best known as host of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs. The same can be said about freelancers. While they aren't necessarily building a startup into a corporation, they are self-employed. They don't have to be and often don't ever want to be committed to one particular employer for any length of time.

Often the corporate drone who aspires to become an entrepreneur starts off with a side gig. Even if the person does so simply to supplement his or her income, it's possible to hone those skills and for that freelance work to become a full-time gig.

And an entrepreneur is created.
