School Says - General Information
Located in New York City, the center of global business, Fordham Business combines academic rigor with program flexibility and business experience, empowering our students to succeed by developing a unique portfolio of career assets. Succeeding in the new world of business requires approaching your MBA the same way you approach your financial investments. In an unpredictable environment Ââ€" to maximize return and minimize risk Ââ€" you want to take a portfolio approach. You invest in a range of career assets, falling into three categories: knowledge, experience, and networks. And then you need to learn how to manage them. At Fordham, your Career and Academic Advisors help you focus your career goals through one-on-one assessment and advice. They also give you the opportunity to meet with experienced alumni to discuss job functions and industries related to your skills and interests. To increase your success, they encourage you to think about both short- and long-term goals to develop career options. Once you define your goals, your Career and Academic Advisors work with you to develop a plan to meet them. You'll look at ways to leverage your current assets. You'll identify gaps you need to fill with new investments in knowledge, experience, and networks. Then you'll develop an investment plan based on short-term and long-term strategies. In the short-term, the goal is to differentiate yourself from the many others seeking the job you want. In the long-term, you want your portfolio of career assets to be diversified enough to keep your opportunities open and strong in a constantly shifting future. This ensures maximum Return On Investment (ROI) over your entire career. Finally, we help you map out a concrete program for you to acquire the knowledge, experience, and network assets you need to implement your strategic plan. To implement your investment plan, we provide you with the resources and flexibility to acquire and combine a wide range of knowledge, experience, and network assets Ââ€" in unique ways. You are offered extensive opportunities to acquire knowledge assets through a wide range of courses, concentrations, specializations, and international options Ââ€" and we give you an unmatched degree of flexibility to assemble these courses in the way that best suits your needs. Through our relationships with companies in New York, the center of global business, we offer multiple opportunities for you to acquire real-world experience through internships, field study and special programs. We also enable you to move between part- and full-time status so you can continue to add to your portfolio of experience as you earn your MBA. At Fordham, you tap into a network of thousands of successful, highly connected Fordham Business alumni, who provide unparalleled one-to-one support, connections, and advice through our unique mentorship program. Students Say - Academics
With top-dog competitors like Columbia University and NYU just a short subway ride away from its Manhattan campus, Fordham's Graduate School of Business Administration has quite a crowd to elbow its way through in order to get the attention it deserves. The school faces a "catch-22": Located anywhere else in the country, Fordham's program would be much better known and much more highly regarded. But at the same time, if it were located anywhere else it couldn't piggyback on the world's business center or the faculties of its competitors, from which it sometimes draws adjunct professors.
Students at Fordham recognize that they have a good thing going, and they have faith that the rest of the world will soon catch on. The school already has a solid reputation in accounting and tax. Its finance department enjoys "a strong reputation on Wall Street," and for good reason: "Professors in Finance are like the drill sergeants in the Marines. They make you work, and they make you think. It is all very practical. They touch on theory here and there, but mostly help you to understand why you need to know this, and then you learn it inside and out. They are also very open to questions. They never force you to just accept that this is the way it is done." Fordham also boasts "the only communications and media management concentration in New York City," a program that sets students up for careers with the city's many broadcast giants.
Fordham caters to part-time students with a "great, flexible schedule" that "allows students to switch between full- and part-time attendance just by taking more or fewer classes. Other schools require you to withdraw and reapply; you don't have to go through that process here." Students who live or work in Westchester County may wish to take advantage of the program's satellite campus in Tarrytown, at which all required courses and select electives are offered. The many full-time employed students here appreciate these conveniences. As one student explains, "The greatest strength of the school is the flexibility it offers. It has core courses and a minimum number of credits to be taken, but you can choose which core courses you want to start with and with what professors. You can also take some elective courses in the first year. It allows you to do internships outside of the summer months because you can regulate your class hours yourself, and there are many evening classes."
Students Say - Admissions
Admission to the Fordham MBA program is competitive. Applicants must submit all of the following materials: a completed application, either hard copy or online; copies of all postsecondary transcripts; an official GMAT score report; two letters of recommendation, preferably from current supervisors, managers, clients, and/or coworkers; a personal statement of length 500 to 1,000 words; and a current resume. International applicants whose first language is not English must also submit an official TOEFL score report. Interviews are not required, but can be granted at the applicant's request. Interview availability is limited; those wishing to interview are encouraged to make their request early in the admissions process. The median GMAT score among admitted students is 600 in the full-time program, 575 in the part-time program.
Students Say - Campus Life
Life in Fordham's MBA program "is very social, with Thursday happy hours every week where you can meet full-time and part-time students and network. There are also many opportunities to join clubs and actively participate in the many activities arranged by the different clubs. You don't have time to do everything!" The school's Lincoln Center location means that fine dining and upscale shopping are just outside the school's doors. One student notes, "We're in the heart of New York City, just off of Central Park at Lincoln Center. It's a great place to enjoy the spring and summer weather. Catching up in Central Park on a Wi-Fi-enabled computer is definitely one of the perks."
About the only criticism of Fordham's facilities is that MBAs feel a little crowded out by other students. One MBA observes, "They need to separate the graduate business school from the other graduate schools located on the campus. The law school feels separate, but the business school shares many resources with both undergraduate and other graduate programs. A graduate business lounge and special study areas within the library that facilitate discussion groups would really help."
Students Say - Careers
The Fordham MBA Career Services Office provides placement and counseling to the school's business graduate students. The office benefits greatly from the school's location in a world finance center; one student observes, "Although not a Top 10 schoolâ€"yetâ€" Fordham still attracts some of the top 200 businesses located in the New York metro area to recruit for employment." Even so, students are aware that their student body is at best the third choice of most big recruiters in New York. One MBA writes, "Honestly, campus recruitment is difficult. Top companies do not invest enough money in recruiting the very talented, best, and brightest students at Fordham." The perception that "career services and a larger, better-equipped staff for career services are needed" does not help matters though the school is enhancing career services and training for students. On a positive note, "the school is currently getting more involved with the alumni," which should improve networking opportunities. Full-timers also benefit from their interactions with part-time students, "most of whom work for prestigious companies in New York City. Networking with the part-time students can lead to jobs and internships."
