Students enrolled in the graduate programs at the Zarb School form a dynamic, achievement-oriented community. These students represent 10 states and 23 countries. About 25% are members of minority groups, 24% are international students and 37% are women. Many students in these graduate programs have previous work experience.
School Says - Academics
The Frank G. Zarb School of BusinessÂ' accounting and general business programs are accredited by AACSB International. The school offers a challenging 41-48 credit M.B.A. program that includes a 15-credit concentration in a major discipline. Our unique curriculum focuses on analysis, decision making and management, through which students gain the knowledge they need to succeed in business. The Hofstra M.B.A. program provides students with broad exposure to the functional areas of business, opportunities to gain hands-on experience in a specific field and specialized instruction in the leadership aspects of business.
School Says - Admissions
Admission is selective. Candidates are required to complete the graduate application and all supporting forms and to submit two letters of recommendation, a résumé, a statement of professional objectives, official transcripts from every college or university attended, and scores obtained on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). International students are also required to submit scores obtained on the TOEFL. For the most recently admitted class, the middle 80 percent range of GMAT scores was from 450 to 630; the average undergraduate grade point average was 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. All credentials submitted in support of the application for admission are carefully considered in making the admission decision. Hofstra subscribes to a rolling admissions policy, with suggested filing deadlines of May 1 for fall admission and November 1 for spring admission. Candidates are generally advised of admission decisions no later than four weeks after the application is completed.
School Says - Campus Life
The Hofstra campus houses 112 buildings, including 37 residence halls and a fully computerized library containing 1.2 million volumes. C.V. Starr Hall, home to the Zarb School of Business, features a state-of-the-art academic trading room complete with Bloomberg terminals and Internet access at every student seat. Additionally, through HofstraÂ's online library, students have access 24/7 to about 30 business databases.
Students Say - Academics
Hofstra is "the school with the best academic reputation on Long Island," an ideal location (bucolic, close to NYC, and near most students' homes and jobs) for the vast majority of its students. Excellent professors and technological resources round out the picture. "My academic experience so far has been very pleasurable," reports one Zarb student. "Professors treat you like a customer, doing their best to meet [and] satisfy your needs [and] concerns. The campus is beautifully maintained, and the university has devoted a lot of resources to improvement [and] expansion of infrastructure and technology on campus." "The business school is making an effort to stay abreast of industry trends, inviting industry leaders as guest speakers, [and] maintaining technologically up-to-date classrooms." Moreover, "The campus is mostly wireless, and every classroom is equipped with SMART Board and AV." To top it off, "The administration is accessible and friendly. They work with each student one-on-one and have the best interests of the student in mind."
Zarb's MBA students must ascend five academic stepping-stones to earn the 48-credit degree. Residency workshops (noncredit classes on such topics as library resources, calculus, and statistics), core competency courses (survey economics, business, and ethics classes), and the advanced core (set courses in accounting, business computer information systems, finance, international business, management, marketing, and quality management) make up the bulk of the program. Well-prepared students can place out of a limited number of courses in these three areas, but those longing for electives must simply console themselves with the quality of teaching within the requirements. "The professors are very engaging and dynamic. I don't find myself getting bored in class but really interested, and [I'm] learning new ideas," says one student. Another adds, "There are no strict lectures, and students always offer comments, ideas, and opinions. Debates have even formed from time to time. Class is quite stimulating." A five-course concentration allows students considerably more freedom in pursuing their passions-from finance to health services management to international business to sports management. One finance major says, "I learned a great deal about finance . . . and business management overall. My professors were great. Most had industry experience and were up to date with current industry trends." The final component is an integrative capstone revolving around teamwork and management simulation.
Zarb's 2.5-year MBA curriculum is broad, deep, and somewhat flexible, allowing students to place out of a limited number of classes and focus on their passions. But Zarb doesn't offer the guidance to match. Students gripe that requirements "aren't clear"and recommend that school administrators "help students choose better classes and inform students about certain classes not offered in the next semester so students can choose other classes."
Students Say - Admissions
Hofstra "has a good reputation, and its entrance requirement is not as high as some other top-tier schools in the city," says one student happily, although another student sees this more as a cause for gripes: "The school could be more selective in who it accepts and, thus, raise some of the academic standards." Indeed, Zarb's 78 percent acceptance rate paints a rosy picture for determined applicants who may not have stellar academic credentials or extensive work experience. The average entering student reports a 3.14 GPA, 521 GMAT, and 5 years of work experience.
Students Say - Campus Life
"Hofstra is mostly a commuter school," explains one Zarb student. "The problem is that it could be more than that, but it doesn't try." But other students see it differently. "[Students] are very involved in clubs and activities," declares one student. Students enjoy "home sporting events [and] drama productions." "The campus is vibrant and beautiful. It feels like a second home to me." Suburban Hempstead is "close to NYC" near the Long Island Railroad which makes for an easy commute into the city, but quiet enough to "allow [students] to concentrate on studying."
Students describe one another as "hardworking, driven"-indeed, most "are working full-time while attending classes"-"cooperative," and "very friendly." Though they "tend to be single and in the early stages of their careers," Zarb students do "represent a wide range in ages" and backgrounds, and, as a result, they "bring different opinions" and "life/work experience" "to each [classroom] discussion." A good bit of the "very diverse" student body is female, and more than half is international. The vast majority "are already employed full-time," most "in the particular field they would like to be in." As a result of having concrete goals, students are very "motivated" and "focused on their education."
Students Say - Careers
The "excellent career center" connects MBAs with jobs in what students call "quality companies in the areas of investment banking, private equity, and institutional finance." Nearly all students take jobs in the Northeast, and the finance and accounting industries account for more than half of students' first jobs post-graduation. Top employers are Integrated Business Systems, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Canon USA, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, GE, Ernst & Young, Cablevision, Protiviti, BDO Seidman, MSC Direct, Computer Associates, Hain Celestial, Marcum and Kliegman LLP, and ADP.
