School Says - General Information
Hofstra University is building on its reputation as a center of academic excellence. With an outstanding faculty, advanced technological resources and state-of-the-art facilities, Hofstra is recognized both nationally and internationally as a university on the rise. The University's hosting of the final 2008 presidential debate put us on the global stage and made the Hofstra name immediately recognizable to people all over the world. Educate '08, a year-long series of lectures, conferences, artistic performances and forums focused on the issues, history and politics of presidential elections, engaged students and the community in the presidential election process. A plan to establish New York's newest medical school is further proof of the Hofstra's momentum.

Even as it plays an increasingly prominent national and international role, Hofstra continues to focus on its students. Undergraduate class size is small, averaging just 22 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 14-to-1, providing an environment that fosters interaction, critical thinking and analysis.

Hofstra's 240-acre suburban campus is located just 25 miles east of New York City and all its cultural offerings and internship opportunities. Hofstra's increasingly accomplished student body is engaged in the community and eager to take advantage of all Hofstra has to offer.

School Says - Student Body
Hofstra has a dynamic campus life, with more than 170 student clubs and organizations, including about 30 fraternities and sororities; 18 varsity sports; and more than 500 cultural events each year. Students can choose from organizations as diverse as the Geology Club, Danceworks, and the Hofstra Organization of Latin Americans.

Hofstra's Division I athletic program includes baseball, field hockey, football, softball, volleyball, wrestling and men's and women's basketball, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. Students who are not Division I athletes can join the student section "Lion's Den" or participate with more than 25 percent of our students in numerous intramural sports.

Students can also attend debates, lectures, and readings by the many scholars, business leaders, writers, and celebrities who visit campus each year. Some great events include the annual "Great Writers, Great Readings" series, the Center for Civic Engagement's Day of Dialogue, and the Distinguished Faculty Lectures.

School Says - Academics
Hofstra University is composed of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, School of Communication, School of Education, Health and Human Services, School of Law, Honors College, New College for Interdisciplinary Studies and School for University Studies. Honors College is a program for high-achieving students; New College (a division of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) offers individualized programs of study and innovative block scheduling; and School for University Studies was developed for students who have demonstrated their potential in non-traditional ways..

Within these schools are many innovative programs designed to meet the needs of our diverse student body. These include Legal Education Accelerated Program (LEAP), a program that allows students to earn both a B.A. and J.D. in six years; and First-Year Connections, an academic, residential and social program that helps first-year students connect to all the resources and opportunities available at the University.

School Says - Admissions
Hofstra University seeks to enroll talented first-year and transfer students from diverse backgrounds and locations, with varied interests. Applications are accepted for fall and spring admission.

The Admission Committee reviews each application individually to assess academic achievement, curricular rigor, leadership potential, depth of extracurricular activities, standardized test scores and overall interest in attending Hofstra University. The application process provides an opportunity for the applicant to share information that may not be apparent on a transcript or through a test score.

School Says - Campus Life
Something is always in bloom on the Hofstra campus. A nationally recognized arboretum, the campus is home to both ivy-covered classroom buildings and sleek, modern buildings. The New Academic Building, an award-winning architecturally distinct structure that houses a theater, music rehearsal space, faculty offices and seminar rooms, is one of the newest buildings on campus.

With New York City just a short ride by train or car, students take advantage of theaters, museums, concerts and professional sports as well as the many internship opportunities the city offers. Broadway shows, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madison Square Garden, Chinatown and Little Italy, and Wall Street all are within easy reach.

Students can also explore Long Island, which offers world-class beaches and parks; the Hamptons; sport fishing and boating; Nassau Coliseum, home of the New York Islanders; and conveniently located shopping malls.

Students Say - Academics
To experience "Long Island in a nutshell," consider Hofstra University, a school that "is dedicated to preparing its students for successful careers." Nearly one-third of the student body is business majors. Hofstra's "great finance program" benefits from "the number-one college Financial Trading Room in the country," while the marketing program supports the Hofstra American Marketing Cub, "which won 'Business Club of the Year.'" Hofstra is also "a great place for accounting majors." Students tell us the communications department is "amazing," with "a state-of-the-art radio station" that "offers a large variety of ways to get involved, whether it's having a show or being behind the scenes." The school also plays "a large variety of music," from "rap to rock to Irish." Hofstra's education program is also highly regarded, boasting "one of the best music education programs in the country." In all areas, students laud "real-world experience on real-world equipment" and great opportunities for internships. In fact, "there are more internships available than there are people, so we are always informed of new opportunities in our majors as they emerge. Our location [relative] to the city presents many summer and winter internships in Manhattan, especially for communications and business majors." Hofstra students can't sit around and wait for someone to tell them what to do. One student writes, "If you want to get something done, you definitely can't wait for it to happen. You have to put yourself out there and meet with teachers and join clubs."

Students Say - Campus Life
Those who live on or near campus tell us " plenty to do here, but you have to have a car to really do it, [because] walking in the area isn't that safe." There are a "ton of malls, movie theaters, and restaurants right around campus." Hofstra "is known as a bar school," and students have many venues to choose from in Hempstead and "cute little surrounding towns" like Mineola and Garden City. On campus, "interest in [intercollegiate] athletics has grown dramatically"; even so, "Many students don't advantage of the free or discounted activities offered at the campus," but enthusiasts say this just forces students "to be more creative" when it comes to finding fun. "With Manhattan only 45 minutes away via the Long Island Railroad," lots of "people also go into New York City for fun, whether it is to shop, see shows, or go to nightclubs." Hofstra makes it easy for students to take regular trips into the city, offering a "free bus from campus that takes students to the train station."

Students Say - Student Body
Long Island is a pretty diverse place, and Hofstra University reflects that diversity reasonably well. One student writes, "My first roommate was a white Orthodox Jew, [who was] very serious about school. My second set of roommates were white Greek and Italian Christians, loud partiers who played beer pong every night," and "my third roommate is white, Catholic, and gay," and "is the nicest person I know." Undergrads tell us "there are two types of students at Hofstra University: The kind who work hard, study and succeed, and the other kind who carelessly roll into class 25 minutes late (if they even go at all) with their Chanel sunglasses and Ugg boots, talking on their cell phones to their friends about their fabulous night out." The latter group is sometimes referred to derisively as "the Long Island kids," and some students describe them as "materialistic" and "apathetic" about school. While there might be lot of "stereotypical Long Island kids" on campus, the school also has "a large minority population," and "It's not hard to find someone here who is interested in the same things you are."
