Opportunity in crisis.(EDITOR'S NOTE)(Letter to the editor)

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT INTERNAL AUDITOR HAS APPEARED to be shrinking over the past few months. It's not your imagination. We're printing fewer pages. Internal Auditor is no more immune to the economic crisis than any other magazine. And like other publishers, we are taking advantage of our online presence to ensure we continue to provide our readers with the quality content they have come to expect.

Even before the economic downturn, magazine publishing was moving toward multimedia. It is no longer enough to just produce a print publication; readers also expect Web-based content. In response to that expectation, we launched InternalAuditorOnline.org in late 2008. The site enables us to provide our readers with additional content, timely news reports, and the ability to interact with our expert bloggers. And now, as we face challenging financial times, we're finding the Web site affords us even more opportunities.

In the coming months, we will be reducing the length of our feature articles slightly to enable us to maintain the number of articles we include in each print edition. Does that mean we're giving you less? Not at all. We will take any quality content that doesn't make it into the magazine and post it on InternalAuditorOnline.org along with other online exclusives. If you subscribe to the magazine you should be able to access the online version, as well.

We will be exploring other ways to better serve our readers, including through the use of social media and other Web 2.0 tools. We will be relying on the results of the magazine's readership survey, which was underway when this issue went to press, to determine just what you'd like to see online and in print as we move forward.

As we face the challenge of having fewer financial resources, we're finding we're able to give you more by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by our online publication (see our Web site table of contents, opposite page). And once the economy picks up again, we will continue to explore ways to best provide you even more of the information you need to succeed in the practice of internal auditing.
