India, a nation of 1.3 billion people, is growing accustomed to the vicious circle of an unhealthy lifestyle, paving the way for a series of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). According to a report published in July 2018 by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the estimated proportion of deaths due to NCDs increased from 37.09 per cent in 1990 to 61.8 per cent in 2016.

From heart diseases, diabetes, obesity, thyroid to hypertension and more, India has become home to over 1 billion lifestyle disease incidents. Specifically, in the urban areas, healthcare has taken a back seat. Hectic schedules and poor lifestyle habits are contributing to degrading life expectancy and accumulating the baggage of ailments almost every person is carrying today, irrespective of their age.

An average Indian adult consumes 3-4 cups of tea every day, taking their calorie intake to 250-300 just from tea. Imagine the amount of overall calories one consumes on a daily basis. The need for calculating your calorie intake is at an all-time high. While the process of personally computing calories is cumbersome, there are apps that help you keep track of your daily diets.

Calculate Calories on a Click

The latest on the block is Calvry, an app that can recognize a food image and calculate the amount of calories it contains. "Not only calories but it will throw the results of nutrients also," stated Vineet Singh, CEO and Co-founder, Calvry. Having spent over a decade leading a corporate life, Singh decided to take a leap into the startup world in 2018 with his friend Ravinder Parashar.

Both of them have faced their own set of lifestyle problems. After using multiple apps and programs for calculating their calorie intake, they came to realize that keeping a record of one's everyday food consumption is not easy. With the thought of making calorie calculation easy, they developed Calvry based on artificial intelligence, machine learning & computer vision.

"There are thousands of varieties in India & each can be prepared in a hundred different ways," Singh stated. Focused on India, Calvry is creating a database of all Indian dishes. With more than 80 per cent accuracy, the objective behind creating the app was not just telling people about their nutrient-intake value but making their lifestyle better & encouraging them for having a healthy eating pattern.
