Google is teaming up with The Associated Press (AP) to provide "authoritative" results leading up to and in the days following the 2020 US election.

"Similar to previous elections, when people come to Search and Assistant looking for information on election results they'll find a dedicated feature with data provided by the AP," Amanda Storey, director of trust and safety at Google, wrote in a blog announcement.

Starting next Tuesday, type in "election results," and you'll find real-time data (in more than 70 languages) for federal and state-level races. Or ask, "Hey Google, what are the current election results?" and the AI Assistant will share details on your phone, smart speaker, or smart display. (You can test the feature ahead of Election Day, but the answer will be disappointing.)

While election-night parties are out of the question this year, you can still get into the patriotic mood with regularly updated coverage from sources on Google Search and real-time live streams from major news providers on YouTube.

YouTube is taking its own steps to ensure viewers receive accurate information, and on Tuesday will launch a new information panel atop search results for queries related to the election, as well as under those videos discussing the vote. Citizens are also encouraged to check out the 2020 US Election experience on Google News, featuring national and local intelligence, interviews, and in-depth analysis.

"In the many months leading up to Election Day, we have consistently focused our efforts on helping voters, protecting our platforms from abuse, and equipping campaigns," Storey said. "In June, we shared information about phishing attempts against the presidential campaigns; and just this month, we published the latest update on our efforts to thwart phishing attempts and disinformation campaigns."

Moving forward, Google will continue to meet with law enforcement officials and other tech companies to share info about suspected interference. And, given the high likelihood of delayed results, the search giant will temporarily pause ads referencing the 2020 election and its candidates or outcome as soon as polls close on Nov. 3.

Facebook recently took a similar approach, promising to stop running political, electoral, and social issue advertisements in the US once the election is over. The social network has also banned new political ads in the week leading up to polling day.
