Our collective impact on the environment is top-of-mind for customers all over the world. It doesn't stop at buying more sustainable products—they increasingly want the companies they buy from to commit to reducing their carbon footprints.

Recent research shows that nearly one-third (32%) of U.S. respondents say they consider the environment all or most of the time when making purchases1. And even though some companies have made efforts to increase sustainability, a whopping 80% of people say they don't believe in companies' sustainability statements2.

Perhaps part of that is because less than 30% of the world's most influential companies have verified emissions reduction targets3. And even though a historic agreement was reached at COP28 to phase fossil fuels out of energy systems to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, only a little more than 40% of U.S. and European companies say they are working to optimize their corporate travel policy to decrease their environmental impact4.

Why focus on travel emissions?

For many businesses, air travel is a significant part of their carbon footprint with four out of 10 European companies saying they need to reduce travel per employee by more than 20% to meet their 2030 sustainability targets5.

"The urgency for climate action has never been greater, and businesses are increasingly looking for solutions that help them to reduce their aviation related carbon footprint. However, it can be a challenge to find a credible solution, particularly considering the ever-increasing reporting requirements and public demand for transparency," said Kristina Öström, Director Brand, Marketing & Customer Experience at Neste's Renewable Products business.

Founded in Finland in 1948, Neste creates solutions for combating climate change using science and innovative technology to transform waste and other resources into renewable fuels and circular raw materials. The company is committed to supporting its customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons of CO2e annually by 2030 by using its products and solutions.

Taking off to a new era: Sustainable aviation fuel.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is widely recognized as a key lever to reduce aviation emissions as it provides a more sustainable alternative to fossil-based jet fuel.

Neste is the world's leading producer of SAF. When used to replace fossil jet fuel, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80%* over the fuel's life cycle. Neste produces its SAF from sustainably sourced, 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste.

So how does SAF provide businesses an opportunity to reduce travel emissions? Earlier this year, Neste launched Neste Impact, offering businesses an easy solution to reduce their air travel and transport emissions by purchasing SAF and enabling them to credibly report on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction achieved.

An emphasis on credibility and transparency.

While customers grapple with companies' claims of sustainability, many businesses are working hard to do something about it. With Neste Impact, they can. Neste says an important element of Neste Impact is that it is aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the gold standard in climate reporting. This enables businesses to credibly report achieved emission reductions by using SAF contributing to their sustainability targets.

Businesses start by setting their targets. Neste can help companies define how much SAF they will need to achieve those target goals. From there, Neste delivers SAF directly to their partner airlines, ensuring that the SAF purchased by the company is used to reduce aviation emissions.

The business then receives a third-party verified report, enabling them to credibly claim their emission reductions against their sustainability targets. The report includes information on SAF volumes supplied, raw materials, and emission reduction achieved.

For businesses that have set high goals for increasing sustainability, utilizing SAF is an ideal way to help accomplish those goals. And the ability to credibly and transparently report emission reductions can be the deciding factor for customers that want and expect those businesses to follow through on their sustainability standards.
