Best Campus FacilitiesStudents Say - Academics
The Boston University School of Management boasts a number of first-rate programs, including a number of specialized MBA programs to suit the needs of the especially ambitious. Students praise the school and love the direction in which the program is headed, telling us that "the Dean of the school is a powerhouse of influence for our community and is continuously upgrading the facilities and the resources available to students and alumni."
BU excels in finance, marketing, and strategy departments, "all of which have renowned professors teaching MBA students in them. Many formerly taught at the Harvard Business School." Students also approve of the Health Sector Management program, which "excels in putting students in contact with leading health companies and service providers. Boston is a great place for both world-class hospital systems and a burgeoning biotechnology community. For students interested in the health sector, it's a great program that is continuing to evolve." BU's MBA in Public & Nonprofit Management is "extremely strong, teaching not only the management skills necessary for public and nonprofit organizations, but also the skills necessary for the management of for-profit social enterprise companies." An MS/MBA in information systems offers "a great technology program in a city that is a hotbed for innovation."
The SMG's faculty is "passionate about what they teach and are available to answer questions outside of class. In addition, professors collaborate with each other to make sure students develop completely. For example, just recently our marketing professor spoke with our data analysis professor about a common shortcoming that arose in our marketing presentations." BU also offers its MBA Program "a strong and developing alumni network. BU has a large Executive MBA program, as well as part-time MBA students who are all integrated into the business environment of Boston and prove to be extremely useful in career efforts."
Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to the BU MBA program must submit the following materials: a completed application; a current resume; personal essays, in response to application questions; two letters of recommendation; official copies of transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work; and an official GMAT score report. Interviews are required for some applicants and are scheduled at the request of the school. In addition to the above materials, international students must also submit an official score report for the TOEFL or IELTS (students whose first language is other than English only; minimum TOEFL score of 250 on paper-based exam, 250 on the old computer-based exam; minimum IELTS score of 7 across each band); a financial declaration; copies of all current visa or I-20 documentation; and a copy of the initial passport page.
Students Say - Campus Life
Life at BU "is busy," writes one full-time student. "Although we're only in class for an average of 3 hours per day, I spend an average of 8 hours on campus, working individually or within my groups in between classes, meeting with professors, etc. Weekends (Fridays through Sunday) are days to read, work on individual assignments, and meet with groups." The workload isn't overwhelming, though; "The School of Management does an excellent job of maintaining a rigorous academic environment while still concentrating on creating a career network that will enable you to succeed after school." Beyond the classroom, students enjoy various club activities and school events. "Organized groups constantly make their presence known through on-campus speakers and events, and most do a good job of mixing social and academic pursuits." One student notes, "The school facilities are excellent, and membership to a great fitness center comes with your tuition: weights, cardio, pool, basketball court, and climbing wall."
Only about 40 percent of MBAs here attend full-time, about 30 percent of whom are international students (students from India and China are especially well represented, according to student response). Students also tell us that "classmates include a good mix of younger and older students, ranging in backgrounds from acting to engineering. They are gregarious, nerdy, competitive, and entertaining." There is a sense among some, however, that "there is somewhat too little work experience from members of our class" (even though the average full-time student enters the program with 4-plus years of work experience).
Those who have the time to socialize (part-timers typically include a number of students with full-time jobs, leaving them little spare time) extol the school's "exciting location near nightlife and Fenway Park. Parking is pretty good, with metered spots close to the school." There is also a parking garage located directly under the school itself. Social life "is extensive and highly important. Boston nightlife is omnipresent and enjoyed to the nth degree. This city allows for adventure right outside of the classroom and the students take advantage of it intensely."
Students Say - Careers
Students report a much-improved Career Center at BU: "they are doing a great job and have shown great improvement in the past [few] years." Students also tell us that "there is now an extremely strong pharma presence recruiting at BU. Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Bristol Meyers all are recruiting heavily from BU." Some still see room for improvement; one such student writes, "Many of the companies that come to campus to recruit are local. Although some big names that have national or even global presence do recruit here, it is a challenge to find a job if you are looking in a specific area that is not Boston."
Top employers of BU MBAs include: BearingPoint, Medtronic, Citigroup, IBM Corporation, Ernst & Young, Fidelity Investments, IDC, Intel, Raytheon, Colgate Palmolive, EMC Corporation, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, L'OrŽal, and Reebok.
