Students Say - Academics
"Cost and location," along with strong word of mouth-students hear "very good reviews from previous MBA students in comparison to other schools"-drive MBA traffic toward the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), an AACSB-accredited MBA program. Convenience is another important factor. One student offers that the school is "flexible with my work schedule"; another agrees that with all MBA classes held at night, it is "easy to integrate school and work."
The school offers two areas of concentration: international business, and health care management. While students tout TAMUCC's "strong accounting program" (the school offers a Master of Accounting in addition to the MBA), some feel that "it would be great to have more management or operations electives" here. As a general rule, "A lot of courses are in the catalog but are not offered and have not been for several years (according to my advisor)." Those with undergraduate degrees in business can complete the TAMUCC MBA in 30 semester hours. Those with degrees in other areas must also complete some or all of six foundation courses covering material typically taught at the undergraduate level.
TAMUCC professors "are available to the students. If you can't meet at their office time, they are always available for an appointment." "I have had profs give me their home number for questions on projects," one student says. Students appreciate the "strong real-life academic instruction" that professors impart. Most "are able to incorporate real-life skills in all aspects of their courses. The things we learn we can actually apply in our jobs," one student relates. To keep students competitive in the job market, professors here "generally try to incorporate many teaching methods that are in use at top business schools like Harvard," by requiring students "to perform many case studies in addition to textual readings. There is a strong emphasis on preparing us to be great oral and written communicators by requiring presentations and papers weekly in multiple classes."
Students Say - Admissions
All applicants to the TAMUCC MBA program must submit the following materials: official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work; an official score report for the GMAT (test score can be no more than 5 years old); two letters or recommendation; a current resume or curriculum vitae; a personal essay stating your reasons for pursuing the MBA; and a completed application form. In addition, international students whose first language is not English must submit an official score for the TOEFL (minimum score: 550, paper-based test; 213, computer-based test) and an evaluation of non-English language transcripts executed by Education Credential Evaluators, Inc., International Education Research Foundation, Inc., or World Education Services. All international applicants must submit an I-34 form or other notarized confirmation of adequate financial support, a copy of their current visa, and proof of medical insurance.
Students Say - Campus Life
"Most graduate students work full-time, have families, and attend school part-time" at TAMUCC, "so their involvement with the school and school activities is minimal." Even so, students report that "group projects are usually done on campus." Those who do have time to participate in campus activities will find that "there is much to do here other than schoolwork." One student explains, "Our calendar is full of events and opportunities. I cannot stress how friendly and happy the ambiance is at TAMUCC."
TAMUCC "has a great campus" located on a 240-acre island surrounded by Corpus Christi Bay and Oso Bay; downtown Corpus Christi is about 10 miles away. Students "are all over the place before classes. You can hear them talking and sharing ideas and enjoying the atmosphere" of this "island university." The library "has plenty of computer labs that are adequate for the campus size and . . . subscribes to many online research databases," which can be used extensively in b-school. Students tell us that "many new buildings are being built and lots of money is pouring into the school." As a bonus, "the university is closely linked with" the surrounding community.
Corpus Christi has a population of about a quarter-million. Its seaside location makes it a popular destination for vacationers and tourists; the city receives 5 million visitors annually. TAMUCC itself attracts a "very diverse group," made up of "young, old, Hispanic[s], foreigners, and your typical Texan[s]." One student reports, "My accounting class has almost 50 percent international students from South Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Phillipines, Russia (Moscow), Turkey, and France." Students here are, "in general, smart people who choose to pursue their master's at night, while working during the day. Everyone is extremely friendly, and you get to know each other because of the small class sizes, which range from 6 to 44. The median class size is probably around 18." There are "a lot" of military personnel in the program, not surprising, given the large military presence in Corpus Christi.
Students Say - Careers
The TAMUCC Career Services office provides counseling and placement services for all undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni of the university. Frequent seminars and presentations are offered on such topics as "How to Job Search in the 'Hidden Market,'" "The Second Interview and Salary Negotiation," and "How to Get a Federal Job." The office also provides career counseling, computer-based self-assessments, job search advisement, online and hard-copy job postings, a career resource library and computer lab, videotaped mock interviews, and job fairs and on-campus recruiting events. Students tell us that the program would benefit from even more "job fairs and more actively getting companies to recruit here." Top employers in the area include the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Christus Spohn Health System, the Corpus Christi Army Depot, H-E-B Grocery Co., Bay Limited, SSP Partners/Circle K, Driscoll Children's Hospital, APAC, First Data, and Gulf Marine Fabricators.
