School Says - General Information
The Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business was founded in 1986 through a gift from one of the country's most successful entrepreneurs. Mr. Massey remains as the only U.S. businessperson to ever take three different private companies public to the New York Stock Exchange. The School was created to offer graduate business programs to Nashville area working professionals and offers both the MBA and MACC degrees in a weeknight, evening format on the Belmont University campus. Belmont is the only private university in Tennessee to maintain AACSB International accreditation in business and accounting.
School Says - Student Body
The typical Massey MBA-Professional student has 6 years of business experience, is 29 years old, and works full-time, while completing the degree program in 2 years. The majority of MACC students are younger, with less business experience and are preparing to sit for the CPA exam. Many MACCs are full-time graduate students. The MBA-Accelerated program is new for 2009-10.
School Says - Academics
The Massey Graduate School resides within the College of Business Administration, which also includes the Center for Entrepreneurship, the Center for Business Ethics, and the Scarlett Leadership Institute, each of which houses additional learning opportunities for students. A Summer Accounting Institute option for aspiring MACC students offers non-business undergraduates a fast-track summer preparation opportunity to begin their graduate accounting course work.
All graduate students complete a brief study-abroad experience course as part of their degree requirements. Trips are scheduled between terms and typically last 8-10 days. Destination options for 2009-10 include Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, France, India, Ireland, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, and Turkey.
The curriculum is designed with 2-credit hour courses instead of the traditional 3-credit format. This gives Massey students a greater breadth of curriculum in the core business/accounting offerings, while also assuring a greater number of electives for matching to a particular student career plan. All students also complete a required entrepreneurship course, as well as advanced preparation in business ethics.
Massey alumni appreciate the existence of the "Massey Passport" program that provides a lifetime option for graduates to return to campus and attend additional classes for free on a space-available basis.
School Says - Admissions
All MBA-Professional applicants are required to complete the GMAT test, submit a personal essay and two recommendations, submit transcripts from all undergraduate coursework, and have completed a minimum of two years of professional business experience. The experience requirement is waived for MACC and MBA-Accelerated applicants. A personal interview is required of all graduate applicants prior to an admission decision.
School Says - Campus Life
All classes are held in the Jack C. Massey Business Center, which includes a variety of high-tech classrooms, computer lab space, a finance trading center, and student support offices. Graduate students also have a separate computer lab workspace, as well as a well-equipped study area.
Students Say - Academics
The Jack C. Massey School of Business at Belmont University offers an academically rigorous program that is designed to meet the needs of nontraditional students. As one such student explains, "Belmont offers a flexible approach to taking classes-I could take classes [if] I needed that experience in my work." Most classes are offered in the evening, and students may elect to enroll in a full- or part-time program. Undergraduate courses in business areas such as accounting and economic analysis, along with competency in language and quantitative skills, are required to begin the graduate program.
The MBA program itself consists of 34 credit hours, 24 of which are taken up by required courses. These classes focus on the management aspects of technology, human resources, finance, and international business, and well as advanced skills in leadership, cost analysis, and entrepreneurship. With the 10 remaining credits, students may continue with a general business degree or pursue concentrations in accounting, finance, health care management, marketing, and entrepreneurship, or music business. Located in Nashville's West End, just blocks from Music Row and down the street from the classically oriented programs at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, Belmont owns and operates the historic Studio B recording complex in conjunction with the Country Music Hall of Fame. "I chose Belmont because of its excellent music business program elective and because of its proximity to the music industry in Nashville," one student said. Opportunities for international study abound, with programs in Ireland, the Czech Republic, China, Chile, France, Germany, and Brazil.
All of the professors at Belmont "were top executives at one point in their careers." "The professors have business experience that I feel will create a richer learning experience," says one satisfied student. Described by students as "good, knowledgeable people who have a desire to teach," the professors at Belmont "are well educated and have impressive backgrounds in their fields." "I feel completely comfortable approaching the professors and am confident they are willing and eager to help me succeed," says one student. Students say the "administration is seamless," although they wish it were "more racially diverse." "Overall though, I think the school has a strong program," says one student, echoing the sentiments of his peers.
Students Say - Admissions
To apply to the Jack C. Massey School of Business at Belmont, you'll need to submit your undergraduate transcript, GMAT scores, two references, a resume, and a one page statement of your career goals. At least 2 years of work experience is required for the Professional MBA, along with prior course work or competency in basic business subjects, quantitative skills, and communication skills. The new accelerated MBA program is designed for individuals with little or no full-time business work experience. Students average about 6.5 years of work experience.
Students Say - Campus Life
Although the classes at Belmont take place in the evening, there is still a strong sense of community among students. As one student explains, "The main reason I went here is for the people." Students here are "very supportive and diverse. I have met a lot of great friends and contacts in the graduate school at Belmont." Some students are "young and recent graduates" and "don't have the level of contacts or job that would make them a good networking contact." While these students may not be "as mature or as settled" as some of the older students on campus, "Most are friendly and helpful." "Other [students] are older and have families" and can "provide knowledge from their career." Some students say their family situation could use some recognition from the university. "Because such a large population of students have children," students say it would be "extremely helpful if [the school] offered child care." Students have nothing but praise for their fellow students: "They are tomorrow's leaders. I look forward to working with each of them." "They are the type of people I would have chosen could I have handpicked people to go to school with."
Students Say - Careers
Belmont employs a staff of advisors dedicated to meeting the needs of business students. At the university's Career Center, MBA students have access to a wide array of services including career planning, resume review, and alumni mentorship programs, as well as workshops on topics such as networking and salary negotiation. With many of Belmont's MBA graduates still living in middle Tennessee, both the school and currently-enrolled students find these alums to be the most useful resources in their job search. Students appreciate the "amount of contacts to the business world" that Belmont offers, but feel that "the school needs to improve its career services." Bridgestone/Firestone, Caterpillar, Hospital Corporation of America, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, and Ernst &Young are among the top firms that recruit at Belmont.
