Students Say - Academics
"According to its students, Oklahoma State offers the best of both worlds: academics that "rival any school in the nation" presented in a "fun, friendly environment" that "keeps the college experience fun and relaxed." A tremendous sense of Orange Pride bonds the campus so that "whether you know someone or not, there is always a friendly face" greeting you. "There is absolutely nowhere you can go without seeing our vibrant orange color," one student says. Undergrads enjoy this benefit without having to forsake "the diversity and unique options of OSU's degree programs"â€"agriculture and engineering are standouts, but the school excels in a number of science and career-track related majorsâ€"supported by "great research programs." An emphasis on "hands-on learning" means "many opportunities outside of the classroom to experience events and ‘real life,'" writes one interior design major. A "proud and loyal" alumni (that includes "tons of distinguished alumni ranging from hedge fund tycoons like T. Boone Pickens to U.S. congressmen and scholars like Anita Hill") is "extremely helpful with internships and jobs." It's another example of that Orange Pride; "The number of legacy students is a testament to satisfaction of OSU alumni," students inform us."
Students Say - Campus Life
"OSU undergrads "are very committed to personal goals, and we all understand why we are at college," but they "also know that these four years should be the time of our lives," and they act accordingly. The party scene "is great, but the school and organizations sponsor some really fun events and activities if partying isn't your thing," and the local bars "are regularly hit up on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays." College athletics are well supported; "During the fall, tailgating is huge, and many alumni come back to visit," and "Cowboy basketball is mind-blowing. There's a reason Gallagher-Iba was dubbed the rowdiest arena in college basketball." An "excellent Greek community" is "pretty integrated into campus, and it's not really a big deal." Hometown Stillwater "is a funky little college town that's like a miniature Austin, TX," with "a strong local music scene that's spawned acts like Garth Brooks, All-American Rejects, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and countless alt-country bands." Many undergrads "hit Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Dallas for a weekend off-campus.""
Students Say - Student Body
"While the majority of students at OSU are "white, small-town, and Christian," (an upshot of the fact that "most students are ag kids"), undergrads assure us that "there are many types of students at OSU" ranging from "the jock frat guy to the hippie who doesn't wear shoes," so "it's easy to express yourself here and not get ridiculed." As one student notes, Although most students are Christian, Hillel is growing rapidly…One of your roommates might be an engineering student from Venezuela, and the other might be a mandolin-playing English major from some small town you've never heard of…Atypical students aren't hard to come across as the campus has plenty of… indie-music types, urban cowboys, Polo-wearing prepsters, hippies, bookish intellectuals and a host of international students who are extremely well integrated into the campus community." Students tend to be "down to earth and friendly, "caring and very welcoming," and "independent and self-reliant" people who "are here for a purpose.""
