Are you a disaster in the kitchen? Maybe you tend to lose track of time and let food get a tad crispy. Well, good news: a new integration between GE and Nest can help make sure you don't ruin dinner -- or burn down the house.

Going forward, if you connect your Nest Protect with an internet-connected GE oven, the smoke detector will keep tabs on what's cooking and shut things down if your meal starts to burn. If Protect senses smoke while the oven is on, for example, GE appliances will send a command to turn the oven off. The GE Kitchen app (iOS, Android) will then send the wannabe chef a mobile push notification to inform them of their culinary fail.

The integration is available now. In the Kitchen app, navigate to the Oven Main UI and then the navigation menu and look for the "Works With Nest" item. Click that to enable Nest and log in with your Nest account info to authorize data sharing between the oven and Nest Protect.

GE says the Protect and the oven don't have to be in any sort of close proximity since the Nest Protect is talking to the Nest Cloud and the Nest Cloud is talking to the GE Appliances Cloud, a GE spokeswoman said.

In the meantime, those preparing food via the Drop Recipes app can now pre-heat and set an oven timer for their connected GE oven from within the app, currently available on iOS.

GE isn't the only home appliance giant dabbling in the Internet of Things. Whirlpool today announced an Amazon Alexa integration that will allow people to control their washer/dryer, oven or fridge via voice control through an Alexa-enabled device.

Tell Alexa to set your oven's cooking mode, temperature and time. Ask her if the oven is on, and what the current temperature is, or to set, start and stop the oven timer. Do the same with the fridge for temperature settings or dryer to see how long you have left on a cycle.

At last year's CES, Whirlpool revealed that its newest refrigerator, dishwasher and range would connect to Amazon Dash Replenishment and Works with Nest to allow for quick ordering of replacement products and home gadget management on the go.
