MARYAM HASSANI AND HAYK VASILYAN, CO-FOUNDERS, HYDRO WIND ENERGY

Hydro Wind Energy is a tech startup focused on developing a disruptive technology to address three major challenges of the 21st century: low-cost clean electricity, grid-scale energy storage, and seawater desalination. The company's approach involves harnessing wind offshore through vertical axis wind rotors, and utilizing mechanical-based energy storage systems. The same systems are designed for large-scale seawater desalination, aiming to contribute to solving the global water crisis. Additionally, the company has successfully developed and commercialized QuenchSea, the world's only low-cost handheld seawater desalination device, serving humanitarian purposes as well as the offshore marine sector.

  • FOUNDED IN: 2020
  • SECTOR: Renewable

"Hydro Wind Energy's technology is aligned with the UAE government's policies on lowering the cost of energy, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing security of supply. Our aim is to reduce carbon emissions by one billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2030. This amounts to over 2% of total carbon emissions globally, or five times what the UAE emits per year, turning the country into a world leader and net reducer of carbon emissions. This technology will thus help create a vibrant and competitive wind energy sector in the UAE, stimulating national job creation, eliminating carbon emissions, improving air quality, and providing an environmentally friendly and easily assimilated grid-connected technology for meeting load growth as well as legislated renewable obligations."
